OHIO SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION COMMISSION
ELECTION LEGAL NOTICE
The Ohio Soil and Water Conservation Commission will cause an election of Supervisors of the Hocking Soil and Water Conservation District to be held in accordance with Chapter 940 of the Ohio Revised Code. Individuals who own or occupy land within the Hocking Soil and Water Conservation District and are 18 years of age or older may vote for Supervisor.
There are three ways an eligible voter can cast a ballot:
(1) At the Hocking SWCD office from October 11, 2023 until November 9, 2023 during normal business hours 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; or
(2) At the Hocking SWCD Annual Meeting & Banquet, Thursday, November 9, 2023 at Old Dutch Restaurant, 12791 St. Rt. 664 S. Logan, OH. 43138 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
(3) Vote absentee from October 11, 2023 until November 9, 2023, by requesting the ballot application and election ballot from the HSWCD office at the following address 148 N. Homer Ave., Logan, OH. 43138, by calling 740-385-3016, or email hswcddpa1@gmail.com
Two Supervisors will be elected to three-year term commencing January 1,2024 and ending December 31, 2026. Nominees are: Kevin Kerns,
Valerie Scott and Brent Swackhamer
Valerie Scott, her husband Mark (a.k.a. Dusty) and their beloved Dalmatian, Mo, live in Logan, Ohio. Valerie is a Robert Morris University graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Management Information Systems. Valerie is retired from Information Technology with over 30 years of employment. She was the President of the Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist Hocking County Chapter from 2020-2022 and continues to be a member of OCVN. Valerie also participates in the Women Owning Woodlands program and is a volunteer for the following: ODNR State Nature Preserves, Crane Hollow Private Preserve, Hocking Hills Monarch Waystation #20927 and Bishop Educational Gardens. Valerie is the owner of DustyBlues, LLC -Art Photography and also owner and woodland steward of Val Lea Oaks, an EQIP conservation project. She is a Hocking SWCD Cooperator and her practices include reforestation, invasive removal, maintaining pollinator fields and grassland habitats for wildlife. She is an avid gardener of fruits, vegetables and native flowers.
Brent Swackhamer has two sons, Brayden and Trevor and they live in Laurelville, Ohio. Brent attended Ohio State University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with studies in Animal Science, Agronomy and Agriculture Mechanization & Systems. He is recently retired from Dupont after 33 years of employment as a mechanic/maintenance and is now self-employed. Brent farms 750 acres in Hocking, Ross and Pickaway Counties. He uses no-till and minimum tillage practices on corn and soybeans. He also raises 4 acres of pumpkins as a specialty crop. Brent has been in the CRP program and has installed many waterways and structures on his farms as well as filter buffers along streams.
Kevin Kerns and his wife Cathy, live in Rockbridge, Ohio. They have three sons, Kyle, Christopher & Cory. Kevin is a Logan Elm High School graduate and attended Hocking College. He is an active member of St. John Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 2299, and Farm Bureau. Kevin is employed by Westerman in Bremen. Kevin is a Hocking SWCD Cooperator and his conservation efforts include: crop tree release, grapevine eradication, timber stand improvement and pasture paddocks with water sources installed for each. Kevin has a brood cow/calf operation with 12 acres.
Kevin is also a participant in the Ohio Landowner/Hunter Partnership program.
